Description

A 3-panel mosaic of this lovely area. One that I always try to image when I get the chance.

As I'm working on my website related to the Lunar 100

www.wouterdhoye.be (so expect an update there in the coming days)

I'll cover the ones visible in this image:

L015: Rupes recta: Archetype lunar fault line

L028: Hipparchus. Just west from Ptolemaeus: Next to being an impressive crater it was the first crater of which a detailed "High definition" drawing was made.

L046: The central peak of Regiomontanus, which has a little crater on top. This little crater is designated Regiomontanus A.

L047: Dark spots in Alphonsus caused by volcanic deposits. The image in fact shows the volcanic craters

L051: Catena Davy: Probably the best known crater chain, caused by a series of impacts when a meteorite disintegrated in multiple smaller objects before making it's impact.

L075: Ptolemaeus B is in the image but needs more grazing light to be visible, as it is a very minor depression in the Ptolemaeus floor.

L061: M¨osting A: a small bowl shaped crater on the Western edge of Flammarion

L092: Vallis Gylden. An elongated valley. formed by secondary impacts when the Imbrium basin was formed. Many similar crevasses can be seen in the Northern part of the image and are part of wat is called the Imbrium Sculpture.
